Lake Fork Fishing Report - 10/12/2012

Water temps are falling and the fishing seems to be picking up a little bit here on Lake Fork. Water temps are in the 70-73 degree range in most parts of the lake and fish can be caught both shallow and deep.

The best shallow bite seems to be in the far northern ends of the lake around the shoreline hydrilla. The fish in these areas are fairly concentrated, so when you catch one, you should catch several in a short stretch. These fish are fairly aggressive and will bite a variety of baits. A 1/4 oz Santone buzzbait in White is tough to beat and a lot of fun both early and late and on days with cloud cover. Small poppers, Santone "Got Five" spinnerbaits, chatterbaits with a LFT Live Swim'n Slug trailer, and lipless crankbaits will also put lots of Lake Fork bass in the boat. Most of the shallow fish are small, but there are some good fish to be caught up there as well.

For the deeper fish, I'm looking in 15-30 ft of water (depending on the day) on main lake structure such as ridges, points, creek channel swings, and road beds. My best bait lately has been a Carolina rigged Lake Fork Trophy Lures Baby Ring Fry in chartreuse pepper. I'm rigging it with a 1 oz sinker and a 4-5 ft leader. A Lake Fork Trophy Lures Magic Shad in watermelon red or green pumpkin will also produce on the back of your Carolina rig. Other baits for the deep fish include a tailkicker, jigging spoon, and flutter spoon. The bite on these baits will continue to improve as the water temps drop.

Lake Fork's water level sits at 399.06 or 3.94 ft below normal pool and there are more and more stumps starting to show up. Please be careful when running the lake as there are a few of these that are near the boat lane. Try to stay as close to the buoy markers as possible when running.

If you'd like to get in on some of the fall action here on Lake Fork, please shoot me an email or give me a call. I have also started booking a good number of trips for the spring of 2013, so if you're thinking about a spring trip, you might want to get it on the books. Also, we are getting close to the time of year when the fishing really takes off on Lake Welsh and Lake Monticello. These lakes can be a lot of fun with good numbers and good quality. As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
