Lake Fork Report - January 13, 2016

We had a great year in 2015 on Lake Fork, and I am really excited about what 2016 will bring us. We were blessed with record rains last year, and that brought the lake up from a low of about 7.5', and we were within a foot of being at full pool for most of the year.

With the higher water levels came an abundance of newly flooded cover for the fish to hide in and spawn in. Without questions, we had one of the greatest spawns Lake Fork has seen in many, many years. We have been catching yearling bass EVERYWHERE!!! Lake Fork's future is really bright. These fish have grown very quickly, and many of them are already close to 12" long, and many of them will spawn themselves in a couple of months. That exponential growth in numbers is exactly what we needed.

The lake is in great shape. The current water level is 402.53 which is about 6" below full pool. The Sabine River Authority has chosen to keep the lake level a little below full pull in anticipation of more rain in the coming weeks. Water temps are in the 50-52 degree range for the most part.

There are many ways to catch fish here right now. We are still spending most of our time in deep water throwing spoons and umbrella rigs, but you can catch some shallow fish on jerkbaits, chatterbaits, and lipless crankbaits. Some guys are finding a few jig fish as well.

I can't wait to see what Lake Fork is going to kick out this spring. I think it's going to be a great year for both quality and quantity, so if you've been thinking about making a trip to Lake Fork, I would encourage you to do so!
